Entwicklungen und Herausforderungen der Sozialen Arbeit in Zeiten multipler Krisen? Einblicke in eine qualitativ-explorative Studie in Tirol

Abstract

Social work practice in Austria has faced persistent challenges in recent years, with the most vulnerable groups bearing the greatest impact. This article examines the development of social work practice in Tyrol, drawing on findings from a broader qualitative, exploratory grounded theory study conducted by the MCI Department of Social Work. The analysis reveals an intensification of working conditions and demands on social workers since 2020, driven by a shortage of skilled staff, a rise in case numbers and complexity, institutional funding requirements, regulatory changes, and heightened social expectations. Participants further reported a shift towards more intensive interventions, despite dwindling resources. These initial results form the basis for developing a grounded theory and are currently being refined through follow-up studies. This ongoing triangulation offers a comprehensive, evidence-based perspective on the current dynamics of social work practice amid adversity.
